How Are You?

This world will change through you.
No other means can save it.

I think about what it is one can do in this world, for this world. Here I am living a good life. Sure, I have some tough stuff happening, who doesn’t? But it is a good life in a good place and I have been so lucky that my road brought me here. I lived through dark times in my country and for all the trouble and imperfections of my beloved land I feel so thankful that it is my home. I could never have foreseen that this is how that story would turn out!

The question is not just what can I do but what I am meant to do? I have had times when I really knew what was required and without looking to left or right did that. It was a narrow focus but in these latter years I have had a real sense of owing something to life.

One impacts the world at large, and one’s own bit of it simply by being. It is how you are, how you behave, how you think, that affects that world. I have become aware how what I say changes the person I am talking to, just today I was speaking to someone who had to help sort out a glitch on a website. I had made it plain how I had struggled, she tried something, no luck. I could hear the tension in her voice. She would try her side and then phone me. Right, so now I had to see if it had been sorted…. I checked: Yes! I said you know what, we have won! She laughed with real pleasure and I could hear her heart open. And that is the power I have. If I can see each person as a person like me, I have something to give.

We go beyond the veil of fear, lighting each other’s way.
The holiness that leads us is within us, as is our home.

A while ago I stood by a person who kept repeating: You can go first. A friend sent me a poem that echoed that, that expanded on it. Let us be with one another in kindness. Let me really look into the eyes of the supermarket checkout lady when I say: Hi, how are you? And you? How are you? Has it been a tough week? Ja, for me too. Has this been a day of shining moments? I really hope so.

Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy,
these fleeting temples we make together when we say,
“Here, have my seat,” “Go ahead—you first,” “ I like your hat.”
